WITNESSING - SHARING THE GOSPEL

In the Bible, witnessing means sharing the message of Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection—with others. It is about testifying to the truth of who God is and what He has done in our lives. The Greek word for witness is martys, which is also where we get the word martyr, signifying the depth of commitment one may have to sharing the Gospel.

Key Aspects of Biblical Witnessing

  1. Proclaiming the Gospel – Jesus commanded His followers to share the good news (Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19-20).

  2. Being a Living Testimony – Our actions and character should reflect Christ (Matthew 5:16, 2 Corinthians 3:3).

  3. Empowered by the Holy Spirit – Witnessing is not in our own strength but through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

  4. Testifying to God’s Work in Our Lives – Personal testimonies can be powerful in sharing faith (Revelation 12:11).

  5. Standing Firm in Faith – Witnessing may involve suffering or persecution, but we are called to remain faithful (2 Timothy 1:8).

Key Scriptures on Witnessing

  • Acts 1:8 (NLT) – "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  • Matthew 5:16 (NLT) – "In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father."

  • Romans 10:14 (NLT) – "But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?"

  • 2 Corinthians 5:20 (NLT) – "So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’"

God’s heart on sharing the Gospel is deeply rooted in His love for all people and His desire for everyone to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4). The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) reveals God’s command for believers to spread the Good News to all nations, making disciples and teaching them His ways.

Key Aspects of God’s Heart on Sharing the Gospel

  1. It’s an Act of Love – Sharing the Gospel reflects God’s love for humanity (John 3:16).

  2. It’s a Command, Not an Option – Jesus explicitly instructed His followers to go and proclaim the Good News (Mark 16:15).

  3. It Brings Salvation – The Gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who believe (Romans 1:16).

  4. It Offers Hope – In a world of brokenness, the Gospel brings healing and eternal life (John 14:6).

  5. It Glorifies God – Proclaiming the Good News honors God and fulfills His plan for redemption (2 Corinthians 5:20).
