What Is The Occult

The occult refers to hidden or secret practices, beliefs, and knowledge that seek to access supernatural or mystical powers outside of God. It often involves activities such as divination, witchcraft, astrology, spirit communication, spell-casting, and other forms of sorcery. The word "occult" means "hidden" or "secret," and it is commonly associated with practices that claim to provide special knowledge or power beyond natural understanding. The Bible warns against involvement in the occult, as it leads people away from God and into spiritual deception (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

While some may view the occult as harmless curiosity, it ultimately opens the door to dark spiritual influences that can bring bondage, fear, and destruction. True spiritual fulfillment and guidance come from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, who is the light that overcomes darkness (John 8:12).

The Bible strongly warns against involvement in the occult, as it is directly opposed to God’s will. The occult refers to practices that seek supernatural power outside of God, such as witchcraft, divination, astrology, sorcery, and communication with the dead. The Occult Is Forbidden by God

The Occult Is Rooted in Darkness and Deception

The Bible reveals that Satan and his demons use occult practices to deceive and enslave people. What may seem like harmless entertainment (horoscopes, tarot cards, psychic readings) can open the door to spiritual oppression.

  • 2 Corinthians 11:14 (NLT): “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
    → The occult often appears attractive, but it is rooted in deception.

  • Ephesians 6:12 (NLT): “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
    → Engaging in occult practices brings people under demonic influence.

The Occult Leads to Judgment

God warns that those who practice the occult bring judgment upon themselves. In both the Old and New Testaments, occult involvement led to destruction.

  • 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 (NLT): “So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium instead of asking the Lord for guidance.”
    → King Saul’s downfall came in part because he sought a medium instead of God.

  • Revelation 21:8 (NLT): “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
    → Those who refuse to repent from witchcraft and other sins face eternal separation from God.

God Calls Us to Repentance and Freedom

If someone has been involved in the occult, God offers forgiveness, deliverance, and restoration through Jesus Christ. Believers are called to renounce all forms of darkness and follow God wholeheartedly.

  • Acts 19:19 (NLT): “A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.”
    → True repentance involves completely turning away from occult practices.

  • James 4:7 (NLT): “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
    → When we reject the occult and submit to God, He protects us from the enemy.

Seeking God Instead of the Occult

God calls His people to seek Him alone for wisdom, guidance, and supernatural power. He promises to reveal His will to those who trust in Him.

  • Jeremiah 33:3 (NLT): “Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.”
    → God, not the occult, is the source of true wisdom.

  • Isaiah 8:19 (NLT): “Someone may say to you, ‘Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.’ But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?”
    → God wants His people to seek Him, not supernatural forces outside of Him.

Reject the Occult, Follow Christ

The occult is dangerous because it leads people away from God and into spiritual bondage. However, through Jesus, there is forgiveness and freedom for anyone who repents and turns to God. He alone provides wisdom, protection, and power for those who follow Him.

God’s heart is for His people to walk in truth, light, and freedom, not deception, darkness, or bondage. The occult stands in direct opposition to God’s will because it seeks supernatural power apart from Him. God, in His love and holiness, warns against any form of occult involvement and calls His people to seek Him alone for guidance, wisdom, and power.

God Desires Our Worship and Trust in Him Alone

God is a jealous God who commands our full devotion. He knows that seeking power or guidance outside of Him leads to destruction and spiritual bondage.

📖 Exodus 20:3-5 (NLT): “You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.”

Seeking Supernatural Knowledge or Power Apart from God

One of the primary ways people enter the occult is by desiring secret knowledge or supernatural power outside of God's will.

Levels of Involvement in the Occult

Occult involvement typically progresses in stages, often starting with curiosity and leading to deeper engagement. The Bible warns against even the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22), as seemingly harmless interests can open doors to dangerous spiritual influences. Below are five levels of occult involvement:

Curiosity & Exposure

This stage involves casual interest, entertainment, or unintentional exposure to occult ideas.

📖 Deuteronomy 18:9 (NLT): “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Watching TV shows, movies, or reading books about witchcraft, ghosts, astrology, or supernatural beings

  • Playing games that involve magic, spells, or summoning spirits (Ouija boards, tarot cards, role-playing games with real occult elements)

  • Lightheartedly reading horoscopes or personality-based astrology

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: Even innocent curiosity can desensitize the mind and lead to deeper levels of interest.

Experimentation & Participation

At this level, a person actively tries occult practices, often thinking they are harmless or fun.

  • Attending fortune-telling sessions, psychic readings, or energy healing sessions

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: Experimentation opens the door to spiritual deception and demonic influence. Many people who start here believe they are in control but later experience oppression or addiction to these practices.

Deeper Commitment & Identity Formation

At this stage, a person identifies with and actively incorporates occult beliefs into their daily life.

📖 Isaiah 47:12-14 (NLT): “Now use your magical charms! Use the spells you have worked at all these years! Maybe they will do you some good. Maybe they can make someone afraid of you. All the advice you receive has made you tired. Where are all your astrologers, those stargazers who make predictions each month? Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds. But they are like straw burning in a fire; they cannot save themselves from the flame.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Practicing spells, rituals, or “white magic” for personal power, healing, or prosperity

  • Seeking “spirit guides” through meditation or channeled messages

  • Claiming to be a witch, mystic, or spiritual healer

  • Mixing Christianity with occult ideas (e.g., blending Bible verses with manifestation practices, using “Christian tarot”)

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: A person at this stage begins to redefine their identity around the occult, making it harder to break free. The deeper the involvement, the stronger the spiritual hold.

Dependency & Spiritual Bondage

The occult is no longer a hobby—it controls aspects of the person’s life.

📖 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NLT): “Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Feeling powerless or fearful without performing rituals or using occult objects

  • Experiencing unexplained oppression, fear, or torment (e.g., seeing shadow figures, hearing voices, sleep paralysis)

  • Developing strong negative reactions to Christianity, prayer, or Scripture

  • Believing that leaving the occult will bring harm or spiritual consequences

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: This level often involves spiritual bondage, meaning the person is under demonic influence and needs deliverance. Many report experiencing uncontrollable thoughts, nightmares, or supernatural attacks.

Full Devotion & Servitude

This is the most dangerous level—active allegiance to occult forces, knowingly or unknowingly serving Satan’s kingdom.

📖 Revelation 9:20-21 (NLT): “But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Engaging in dark magic, blood rituals, or summoning spirits

  • Pledging oneself to occult deities, spirits, or Satan himself

  • Performing demonic rituals, sacrifices, or engaging in occult sex magic

  • Seeking occult revenge or controlling others through witchcraft

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: At this point, demonic possession can occur, and the person actively resists Jesus Christ. Many who reach this level experience severe oppression, loss of personal peace, and destructive consequences in their lives.

How to Escape the Occult & Find Freedom in Christ

If you recognize yourself in any of these stages, know that there is hope and deliverance in Jesus Christ!

✔️ Repent & Turn to Jesus – Confess your involvement and renounce all ties to the occult (Acts 3:19).
✔️ Destroy Occult Items – Get rid of any books, objects, or symbols tied to occult practices (Acts 19:19).
✔️ Break Spiritual Ties – Pray in the name of Jesus, rejecting any past involvement (James 4:7).
✔️ Fill Your Life with God’s Word – Replace occult influences with the Bible and godly teaching (Romans 12:2).

Encouragement

No matter what darkness you face, Jesus has already won the victory! (John 16:33).
