THE OCCULT

What Is The Occult

The occult refers to hidden or secret practices, beliefs, and knowledge that seek to access supernatural or mystical powers outside of God. It often involves activities such as divination, witchcraft, astrology, spirit communication, spell-casting, and other forms of sorcery. The word "occult" means "hidden" or "secret," and it is commonly associated with practices that claim to provide special knowledge or power beyond natural understanding. The Bible warns against involvement in the occult, as it leads people away from God and into spiritual deception (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

While some may view the occult as harmless curiosity, it ultimately opens the door to dark spiritual influences that can bring bondage, fear, and destruction. True spiritual fulfillment and guidance come from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, who is the light that overcomes darkness (John 8:12).

The Bible strongly warns against involvement in the occult, as it is directly opposed to God’s will. The occult refers to practices that seek supernatural power outside of God, such as witchcraft, divination, astrology, sorcery, and communication with the dead. God desires His people to seek Him alone for wisdom, guidance, and power rather than turning to dark spiritual forces.

The Occult Is Forbidden by God

God makes it clear that any engagement with the occult is sinful and detestable to Him. He calls His people to avoid all forms of occult practices because they open doors to deception and demonic influence.

  • Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (NLT): “And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
→ God explicitly prohibits all forms of occult activity.

  • Leviticus 19:31 (NLT): “Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the Lord your God.”
→ Seeking supernatural guidance apart from God leads to spiritual defilement.

The Occult Is Rooted in Darkness and Deception

The Bible reveals that Satan and his demons use occult practices to deceive and enslave people. What may seem like harmless entertainment (horoscopes, tarot cards, psychic readings) can open the door to spiritual oppression.

  • 2 Corinthians 11:14 (NLT): “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
→ The occult often appears attractive, but it is rooted in deception.

  • Ephesians 6:12 (NLT): “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
→ Engaging in occult practices brings people under demonic influence.

The Occult Leads to Judgment

God warns that those who practice the occult bring judgment upon themselves. In both the Old and New Testaments, occult involvement led to destruction.

  • 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 (NLT): “So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium instead of asking the Lord for guidance.”
→ King Saul’s downfall came in part because he sought a medium instead of God.

  • Revelation 21:8 (NLT): “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
→ Those who refuse to repent from witchcraft and other sins face eternal separation from God.

God Calls Us to Repentance and Freedom

If someone has been involved in the occult, God offers forgiveness, deliverance, and restoration through Jesus Christ. Believers are called to renounce all forms of darkness and follow God wholeheartedly.

  • Acts 19:19 (NLT): “A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.”
→ True repentance involves completely turning away from occult practices.

  • James 4:7 (NLT): “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
→ When we reject the occult and submit to God, He protects us from the enemy.

Seeking God Instead of the Occult

God calls His people to seek Him alone for wisdom, guidance, and supernatural power. He promises to reveal His will to those who trust in Him.

  • Jeremiah 33:3 (NLT): “Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.”
→ God, not the occult, is the source of true wisdom.

  • Isaiah 8:19 (NLT): “Someone may say to you, ‘Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.’ But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?”
→ God wants His people to seek Him, not supernatural forces outside of Him.

Reject the Occult, Follow Christ

The occult is dangerous because it leads people away from God and into spiritual bondage. However, through Jesus, there is forgiveness and freedom for anyone who repents and turns to God. He alone provides wisdom, protection, and power for those who follow Him.

If you or someone you know has been involved in the occult, take these steps:
Repent – Confess and turn away from all occult involvement.
Remove – Get rid of any occult-related objects (books, tarot cards, crystals, etc.).
Renounce – Declare out loud that you reject all occult practices and belong to Jesus.
Rely on God – Seek God’s guidance through prayer, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit.

📖 Romans 12:2 (NLT): “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

God desires His people to walk in truth and light, not deception and darkness. Seek Him, and He will lead you into His perfect will!

God’s Heart on the Occult

God’s heart is for His people to walk in truth, light, and freedom, not deception, darkness, or bondage. The occult stands in direct opposition to God’s will because it seeks supernatural power apart from Him. God, in His love and holiness, warns against any form of occult involvement and calls His people to seek Him alone for guidance, wisdom, and power.

God Desires Our Worship and Trust in Him Alone

God is a jealous God who commands our full devotion. He knows that seeking power or guidance outside of Him leads to destruction and spiritual bondage.

📖 Exodus 20:3-5 (NLT): “You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.”

📖 Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (NLT): “And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”

🔹 God warns against the occult because it replaces trust in Him with trust in demonic influences.

The Occult Leads to Spiritual Deception and Bondage

God’s heart is for His people to be free, not enslaved to sin or demonic influence. The occult may appear attractive or harmless, but it leads to darkness.

📖 Isaiah 8:19 (NLT): “Someone may say to you, ‘Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.’ But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the dead?”

📖 2 Corinthians 11:14 (NLT): “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

🔹 God knows that the occult is Satan’s way of deceiving people, drawing them into a world that seems enlightening but leads to destruction.

God Calls His People to Repent and Walk in His Light

God’s heart is always for redemption. He offers forgiveness and deliverance to those who have engaged in the occult but turn back to Him.

📖 Acts 19:19 (NLT): “A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.”

📖 Colossians 1:13 (NLT): “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.”

🔹 God does not abandon those who have been involved in the occult—He calls them to repent, be free, and walk in His light.

God’s Power Is Greater Than Any Occult Power

The occult seeks supernatural power, but all true power belongs to God. He alone has authority over the spiritual realm, and those who trust in Him have no need for occult practices.

📖 1 John 4:4 (NLT): “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”

📖 Luke 10:19 (NLT): “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

🔹 God’s heart is for His people to rely on His power, not the counterfeit power of the enemy.

God Calls Us to Be Set Apart and Holy

God wants His people to be different from the world—to be holy and set apart for Him. That means rejecting the occult and anything that dishonors Him.

📖 Leviticus 20:6 (NLT): “I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead. I will cut them off from the community.”

📖 Romans 12:2 (NLT): “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

🔹 God’s heart is for His people to reflect His holiness by rejecting all forms of darkness and following His ways.

God’s Call to Reject the Occult and Follow Him

God’s heart is clear—He desires His people to seek Him alone for wisdom, power, and guidance. The occult is a dangerous trap that leads to spiritual deception and bondage. However, God’s love is greater than any darkness, and He offers redemption and freedom to all who turn to Him.

✅ If you or someone you know has been involved in the occult, here’s what to do:

  • Repent – Turn away from any occult practices and confess it to God.

  • Remove – Get rid of any objects associated with the occult (books, crystals, tarot cards, etc.).

  • Renounce – Verbally declare that you reject the occult and belong to Jesus.

  • Rely on God – Seek His wisdom through prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit.

📖 John 8:36 (NLT): “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”

🔹 God’s heart is for His people to walk in freedom, truth, and His divine power—not the false power of the occult.

What Are Openings into the Occult?

Openings into the occult are ways in which people—knowingly or unknowingly—become involved with dark spiritual forces. These openings can expose individuals to demonic influences, deception, and spiritual bondage. The Bible warns believers to avoid any practices that seek supernatural power apart from God.

Seeking Supernatural Knowledge or Power Apart from God

One of the primary ways people enter the occult is by desiring secret knowledge or supernatural power outside of God's will.

🔹 Examples:

  • Horoscopes, astrology, and zodiac signs

  • Fortune-telling, tarot card readings, palm reading

  • Mediumship and attempting to communicate with the dead

  • Channeling or automatic writing

Witchcraft, Sorcery, and Magic

Many people are drawn into the occult through fascination with magic and spells, believing them to be harmless. However, the Bible clearly condemns any form of witchcraft or sorcery.

📖 Galatians 5:19-21 (NLT): “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Casting spells or rituals

  • Using charms, crystals, or talismans for supernatural power

  • Love spells or curses

  • Engaging in Wicca or New Age magic

Divination and Occult Practices

Divination involves seeking guidance or hidden knowledge through supernatural means instead of relying on God.

📖 Isaiah 47:13-14 (NLT): “All the advice you receive has made you tired. Where are all your astrologers, those stargazers who make predictions each month? Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds. But they are like straw burning in a fire; they cannot save themselves from the flames.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Ouija boards and spirit boards

  • Crystal ball gazing

  • Angel cards, rune readings, or pendulum dowsing

  • Tea leaf or palm readings

Involvement with Spirits, Ghosts, and the Dead

The Bible forbids communicating with spirits or trying to contact the dead because these are deceptive demonic forces.

📖 Leviticus 19:31 (NLT): “Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the Lord your God.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Ghost hunting or paranormal investigations

  • Using séances to contact spirits

  • Believing in and interacting with spirit guides

  • Worshiping ancestors or practicing ancestral rituals

Occult-Inspired Entertainment and Media

Exposure to occult themes in movies, books, and music can be an entry point into deeper engagement with dark spiritual forces.

📖 Philippians 4:8 (NLT): “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Watching horror films and paranormal TV shows

  • Listening to music with occultic lyrics

  • Reading books or playing games that involve witchcraft or demonic themes

  • Engaging with supernatural role-playing games

Participation in False Religious or Mystical Practices

Some religious practices claim to offer spiritual enlightenment but lead people away from God’s truth.

📖 1 Timothy 4:1 (NLT): “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Yoga and meditation rooted in Hinduism or Eastern mysticism

  • Energy healing (Reiki, chakra balancing, etc.)

  • Law of attraction and manifesting

  • Universalism and belief in all paths leading to God

Drug Use and Altered States of Consciousness

Drugs that alter the mind can open doors to demonic influence by distorting reality and weakening spiritual defenses.

📖 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT): “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Psychedelic drug use (LSD, mushrooms, DMT, ayahuasca)

  • Shamanic or hallucinogenic rituals

  • Practices that induce trance states for supernatural experiences

Unhealthy Fascination with Darkness and Evil

A deep attraction to dark themes, symbols, and ideas can be an opening into the occult.

📖 Ephesians 5:11 (NLT): “Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.”

🔹 Examples:

  • Wearing occult symbols (pentagrams, all-seeing eye, etc.)

  • Engaging in Satanism or demonic worship

  • Writing or speaking curses or blasphemous words

  • Playing with demonic-themed board games or rituals

How to Close These Openings and Find Freedom in Christ

If you have been involved in any occult practices, God offers complete freedom and deliverance through Jesus Christ. Here’s how to break free:

Repent – Confess and turn away from any occult involvement (1 John 1:9).
Renounce – Verbally reject and break any ties with occult practices (James 4:7).
Remove – Destroy any occult objects, books, or symbols (Acts 19:19).
Rely on God – Seek wisdom and power only from God through prayer and Scripture (Colossians 1:13).
Receive Deliverance – Ask God for complete spiritual freedom and seek Christian support if needed (John 8:36).

📖 James 4:7 (NLT): “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

🙌 God’s heart is for you to walk in light, truth, and freedom—not in deception or darkness!

Signs of Occult Involvement

Involvement in the occult can often begin subtly and progress into deeper spiritual deception. The Bible warns against seeking supernatural power or wisdom outside of God. Here are some key signs that indicate occult involvement:

Increased Fascination with the Supernatural

A growing curiosity or obsession with mystical, supernatural, or dark spiritual topics can be an indicator of occult influence.

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Constantly watching or reading occult-related content (witchcraft, ghost-hunting, astrology, etc.)

  • Seeking hidden knowledge or mystical experiences

  • Desire to control spiritual forces

Using Occult Practices for Guidance or Power

Turning to anything other than God for insight, protection, or power opens the door to spiritual deception.

📖 Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (NLT): “Do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Consulting tarot cards, palm readers, horoscopes, or psychics

  • Using pendulums, Ouija boards, or crystals for “energy healing”

  • Practicing spells, rituals, or divination

Experiencing Strange Supernatural Occurrences

Occult involvement often leads to unusual or disturbing spiritual experiences.

📖 Ephesians 6:12 (NLT): “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Seeing shadowy figures, strange lights, or hearing unexplained voices

  • Objects moving or electronic disturbances without cause

  • Feeling an oppressive or eerie presence

  • Experiencing sleep paralysis or terrifying dreams

Unexplained Fear, Anxiety, or Depression

Engaging in the occult can invite spiritual oppression, leading to deep emotional and mental struggles.

📖 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT): “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Persistent anxiety or paranoia with no clear cause

  • Feeling a constant presence of evil or being watched

  • Experiencing depression or despair after engaging in occult practices

A Shift Away from Biblical Truth

One of the most dangerous signs of occult influence is rejecting the Bible’s teachings in favor of New Age or mystical beliefs.

📖 1 Timothy 4:1 (NLT): “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Questioning or rejecting core Christian beliefs (Jesus as Lord, salvation through Christ alone)

  • Believing in “all paths lead to God” or universalism

  • Mixing Christianity with New Age ideas (manifestation, law of attraction, energy work)

Uncontrollable or Harmful Urges

Occult involvement often leads to increased temptation, addiction, or even self-destructive behavior.

📖 John 10:10 (NLT): “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Sudden increase in violent or dark thoughts

  • Feeling drawn to harm yourself or others

  • Addictions worsening after engaging in the occult

Feeling “Bound” or Powerless to Stop

Many who have engaged in occult practices find themselves unable to stop, feeling spiritually trapped.

📖 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NLT): “For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

🔹 Warning Signs:

  • Feeling compelled to continue occult practices despite knowing they are wrong

  • Unexplained feelings of oppression or spiritual heaviness

  • Fear of leaving occult practices behind

🙌 Jesus came to set you free! If you’ve been involved in the occult, you are not beyond His redemption. Surrender to Him, and He will restore you!

Levels of Involvement in the Occult

Occult involvement typically progresses in stages, often starting with curiosity and leading to deeper engagement. The Bible warns against even the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22), as seemingly harmless interests can open doors to dangerous spiritual influences. Below are five levels of occult involvement:

Curiosity & Exposure

This stage involves casual interest, entertainment, or unintentional exposure to occult ideas.

📖 Deuteronomy 18:9 (NLT): “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Watching TV shows, movies, or reading books about witchcraft, ghosts, astrology, or supernatural beings

  • Playing games that involve magic, spells, or summoning spirits (Ouija boards, tarot cards, role-playing games with real occult elements)

  • Lightheartedly reading horoscopes or personality-based astrology

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: Even innocent curiosity can desensitize the mind and lead to deeper levels of interest.

Experimentation & Participation

At this level, a person actively tries occult practices, often thinking they are harmless or fun.

📖 Galatians 5:19-20 (NLT): “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division...”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Practicing meditation or visualization for supernatural power (manifestation, law of attraction)

  • Using crystals, charms, or amulets for protection or luck

  • Attending fortune-telling sessions, psychic readings, or energy healing sessions

  • Playing with divination tools (tarot, pendulums, astrology charts)

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: Experimentation opens the door to spiritual deception and demonic influence. Many people who start here believe they are in control but later experience oppression or addiction to these practices.

Deeper Commitment & Identity Formation

At this stage, a person identifies with and actively incorporates occult beliefs into their daily life.

📖 Isaiah 47:12-14 (NLT): “Now use your magical charms! Use the spells you have worked at all these years! Maybe they will do you some good. Maybe they can make someone afraid of you. All the advice you receive has made you tired. Where are all your astrologers, those stargazers who make predictions each month? Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds. But they are like straw burning in a fire; they cannot save themselves from the flame.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Practicing spells, rituals, or “white magic” for personal power, healing, or prosperity

  • Seeking “spirit guides” through meditation or channeled messages

  • Claiming to be a witch, mystic, or spiritual healer

  • Mixing Christianity with occult ideas (e.g., blending Bible verses with manifestation practices, using “Christian tarot”)

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: A person at this stage begins to redefine their identity around the occult, making it harder to break free. The deeper the involvement, the stronger the spiritual hold.

Dependency & Spiritual Bondage

The occult is no longer a hobby—it controls aspects of the person’s life.

📖 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (NLT): “Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Feeling powerless or fearful without performing rituals or using occult objects

  • Experiencing unexplained oppression, fear, or torment (e.g., seeing shadow figures, hearing voices, sleep paralysis)

  • Developing strong negative reactions to Christianity, prayer, or Scripture

  • Believing that leaving the occult will bring harm or spiritual consequences

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: This level often involves spiritual bondage, meaning the person is under demonic influence and needs deliverance. Many report experiencing uncontrollable thoughts, nightmares, or supernatural attacks.

Full Devotion & Servitude

This is the most dangerous level—active allegiance to occult forces, knowingly or unknowingly serving Satan’s kingdom.

📖 Revelation 9:20-21 (NLT): “But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk! And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

🔹 Common Signs:

  • Engaging in dark magic, blood rituals, or summoning spirits

  • Pledging oneself to occult deities, spirits, or Satan himself

  • Performing demonic rituals, sacrifices, or engaging in occult sex magic

  • Seeking occult revenge or controlling others through witchcraft

🚨 Why It’s Dangerous: At this point, demonic possession can occur, and the person actively resists Jesus Christ. Many who reach this level experience severe oppression, loss of personal peace, and destructive consequences in their lives.

How to Escape the Occult & Find Freedom in Christ

If you recognize yourself in any of these stages, know that there is hope and deliverance in Jesus Christ!

✔️ Repent & Turn to Jesus – Confess your involvement and renounce all ties to the occult (Acts 3:19).
✔️ Destroy Occult Items – Get rid of any books, objects, or symbols tied to occult practices (Acts 19:19).
✔️ Break Spiritual Ties – Pray in the name of Jesus, rejecting any past involvement (James 4:7).
✔️ Fill Your Life with God’s Word – Replace occult influences with the Bible and godly teaching (Romans 12:2).
✔️ Seek Deliverance & Discipleship – Find a strong Christian community and a leader to help you walk in freedom (Hebrews 10:25).

🙌 No one is beyond God’s grace! Jesus came to set captives free (Luke 4:18), and He has the power to break every chain. If you have been involved in the occult, surrender to Him today, and He will restore you completely!
