THE FIGHT

Are We Called To Fight?

Yes, as Christians, we are indeed called to fight—and not in the way the world often perceives fighting. Our battle is not against people, it is against spiritual forces, as described in Scripture. The fight we are called to engage in is a spiritual battle, one that requires perseverance, faith, and trust in God. Here are some key aspects of the Christian "fight":

The Spiritual Battle

  • Ephesians 6:12 – "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

  • Christians are called to stand firm against the forces of evil, using spiritual armor to defend themselves and advance the kingdom of God.

Fighting the Good Fight of Faith

  • 1 Timothy 6:12 – "Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses."

  • This emphasizes the importance of faith. Our fight is to hold fast to our faith in Christ, not to be swayed by the temptations, doubts, or distractions of the world.

Overcoming Temptation

  • James 4:7 – "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

  • As Christians, we are called to resist the devil and overcome temptations. This requires a fight against our sinful nature, worldly desires, and spiritual battles.

Fighting for Justice and Righteousness

  • Micah 6:8 – "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

  • Christians are called to fight for justice, mercy, and righteousness in this world. This involves standing up for the oppressed, speaking truth, and loving others as Christ loves us.

Fighting Against Doubts and Unbelief

  • Romans 14:23 – "But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin."

  • The battle of faith is also about overcoming doubts and choosing to trust in God's Word and promises, even when circumstances try to shake us.

The Ultimate Victory in Christ

  • 1 Corinthians 15:57 – "But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

  • Ultimately, the fight is not ours to win on our own; Christ has already secured the ultimate victory over sin, death, and the devil through His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection. As Christians, we fight from a position of victory, not defeat.

Fighting to Spread the Gospel

  • Matthew 28:19-20 – "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

  • Our fight also includes the mission to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, to make disciples, and to teach others to follow His ways.

While the Christian call to fight is not physical or violent, it is a spiritual call to stand firm in our faith, resist temptation, pursue justice, and spread the Gospel. We are called to be warriors for God’s kingdom, but the weapons of our warfare are spiritual, as described in 2 Corinthians 10:4: "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds."

The ultimate victory is already secured through Jesus Christ, and we are called to live in that victory, fighting for righteousness and the spread of His truth until His return.

God's Heart on "The Fight"

God’s heart on "the fight" often revolves around spiritual battles, perseverance, and overcoming life's challenges with faith in Him. The Bible speaks of the Christian life as one that requires strength, courage, and resilience, trusting in God’s power to sustain us in difficult times. Here’s how the Bible addresses "the fight":

Spiritual Warfare:

The Bible acknowledges that Christians are in a spiritual battle against forces of darkness, but assures us that God is with us in the fight. Paul encourages believers to put on the full armor of God to stand firm against the devil’s schemes (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV): “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Fight the Good Fight of Faith:

In 1 Timothy 6:12, Paul encourages believers to "fight the good fight of faith," meaning we are to remain steadfast in our trust in God despite the challenges we face. This fight is one of maintaining our spiritual integrity and holding on to the hope of eternal life.

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV): “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

Perseverance in Trials:

God’s heart is that we persevere through life’s struggles, knowing that our faith is refined through difficulties. He is with us in every trial and will provide the strength needed to overcome.

James 1:12 (NIV): “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

Victory Through Christ:

Ultimately, God’s heart is for us to experience victory through Jesus Christ, who has already won the ultimate battle over sin and death. The Christian fight is not one of defeat but of triumph, as we are more than conquerors through Christ.

Romans 8:37 (NIV): “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV): “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Resting in God’s Strength:

While the fight may seem overwhelming, God’s heart is to remind us that we are not fighting alone. He equips us with His strength and calls us to rest in His power. In times of weakness, we find His strength.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Hope for the Final Victory:

God’s heart is also seen in the ultimate promise of victory in the new heaven and new earth, where all struggles and battles will be over, and we will live in eternal peace with Him.

Revelation 21:4 (NIV): “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

In essence, God’s heart on the fight is about encouraging us to remain strong, trust in His power, and remember that the victory has already been secured in Christ. Whatever battles we face—whether spiritual, emotional, or physical—God is with us and gives us the strength to overcome. He calls us to fight the good fight of faith, knowing that our ultimate victory is in Him.

Ephesians 6:10-12 (NLT)

"A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places."

Context: This passage speaks about the spiritual warfare that every believer faces. We are not fighting against human enemies, but spiritual forces that seek to undermine our faith. Paul encourages us to put on the armor of God.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT)

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are."

Context: Peter emphasizes the importance of standing firm in the faith and resisting the devil, recognizing that spiritual warfare is universal among believers.

Romans 8:37 (NLT)

"No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us."
