ETERNITY

What is Evangelism?

Evangelism is the act of spreading the message of the Gospel — the good news of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection — with the intention of sharing God's love, salvation, and hope for eternal life. The goal of evangelism is to invite others to believe in Jesus, to help them understand God's plan for salvation, and to encourage them to begin or deepen their relationship with God.

Evangelism can take many forms, such as:

  • Personal Evangelism: Sharing the message of Jesus in one-on-one conversations, building relationships, and sharing personal testimonies.

  • Public Evangelism: Preaching or proclaiming the Gospel to large groups of people, whether through events, social media, or outreach initiatives.

  • Missionary Work: Going to different places or cultures, often outside one's own community or country, to share the Gospel in new contexts.

  • Service Evangelism: Demonstrating God’s love through acts of kindness, compassion, and service, and then sharing the reason behind the actions, which is the love of Christ.

The Bible encourages believers to share the Gospel and make disciples, which is often referred to as the Great Commission, as seen in Matthew 28:19-20:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Evangelism is about loving others enough to share the message of salvation and helping people experience the transformative power of God’s love.

Key Aspects of Eternity

Evangelism encompasses several key aspects that guide how the message of Jesus Christ is shared and spread. These aspects reflect the heart, purpose, and methods used in evangelism:

The Message of the Gospel

Evangelism is centered on proclaiming the Gospel — the good news of Jesus Christ. This message involves:

  • The life of Jesus: His teachings, miracles, and compassion.

  • The death of Jesus: His sacrificial death on the cross to atone for sin.

  • The resurrection of Jesus: Jesus’ victory over death, offering eternal life to all who believe.

  • Salvation: Through faith in Jesus Christ, people can receive forgiveness for their sins and the gift of eternal life (John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Great Commission

Evangelism is a direct command from Jesus, known as the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). This commission calls believers to:

  • Go into all the world and make disciples.

  • Baptize new believers in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • Teach them to obey Christ’s commands. This aspect emphasizes that evangelism is a command, not just a suggestion.

Personal Testimony

Sharing your personal story of how Jesus has impacted your life is a powerful tool in evangelism. Your testimony demonstrates God’s transformative power in a real, relatable way. It shows how Jesus has changed your life and why others should follow Him as well (Acts 1:8, Revelation 12:11).

Building Relationships

Evangelism is not just about delivering a message, but about building relationships and showing God’s love. By engaging with people, understanding their struggles, and showing genuine care, evangelism becomes an invitation rather than an imposition (John 13:34-35). Relationships provide opportunities to share the Gospel more effectively.

Living Out the Gospel

Evangelism is not just about words; it’s also about actions. Believers are called to live out their faith in ways that reflect the love and character of Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:16, Philippians 2:14-15). By modeling Christlike behavior, evangelism becomes a natural outflow of one's life, attracting others to the faith through actions as much as through words.

Boldness and Courage

Evangelism requires boldness and courage to speak about Jesus in a world that may be indifferent or hostile to the message. The Apostle Paul often asked for prayer for boldness (Ephesians 6:19-20), and believers are encouraged to share the Gospel with confidence in God's power (2 Timothy 1:7-8, Romans 1:16).

Compassion and Love

Evangelism must be done with compassion and love for others. Jesus had deep compassion for the lost, and He called His followers to do the same (Matthew 9:36-38, Luke 10:27). The message should always be communicated in love and respect, with a genuine desire to see others come to know Christ.

Prayer

Prayer is foundational to effective evangelism. Believers should pray for opportunities to share the Gospel, for the hearts of those they evangelize to be open, and for boldness and wisdom in speaking the truth (Colossians 4:3-4, 1 Timothy 2:1-4). Prayer invites God's presence and power into the evangelistic process.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

Evangelism is not solely dependent on human effort. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in convicting hearts, opening eyes, and empowering believers to share the Gospel effectively (John 16:8, Acts 1:8). It’s essential to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, strength, and effectiveness in evangelism.

Discipleship

Evangelism isn’t just about conversion; it’s about making disciples — guiding new believers to grow in their faith and follow Christ (Matthew 28:19-20, 2 Timothy 2:2). After someone comes to faith, the next step is to help them understand Scripture, grow in spiritual maturity, and live out their faith in their daily lives.

These aspects collectively form a holistic approach to evangelism, where the focus is not just on the act of sharing the Gospel, but on building relationships, living out faith, and relying on God's power to transform lives.

God's Heart on Evangelism?

God's heart on evangelism is deeply rooted in His love for humanity and His desire for all people to come to know Him, experience His grace, and be saved. The Bible emphasizes that God is not willing for anyone to perish, but that everyone should have the opportunity to hear the gospel and be transformed by it. Evangelism is about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and inviting others into a relationship with Him.

Here are key elements of God's heart on evangelism:

God's Desire for All to Be Saved:

God's heart is that everyone should come to know Him and be saved.

  • 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NLT): “This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.”

The Great Commission:

Jesus commands His followers to go and make disciples of all nations. Evangelism is a command from God to share His message of hope and salvation.

  • Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT): “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.”

Compassion for the Lost:

Jesus demonstrated compassion for those who were lost and in need of salvation. He saw people as sheep without a shepherd and was moved with compassion to seek and save the lost.

  • Matthew 9:36-38 (NLT): “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.’”

God's Love for the World:

Evangelism is a reflection of God's love for the world. John 3:16 shows that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that people might be saved through faith in Him.

  • John 3:16 (NLT): “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

The Role of the Holy Spirit:

The Holy Spirit is deeply involved in the work of evangelism, convicting hearts and drawing people to Christ. Evangelism is not just about human effort, but about partnering with the Holy Spirit in His work.

  • John 16:8 (NLT): “And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

Evangelism as an Act of Love:

Evangelism is a way of expressing God’s love for others. It is about caring for the eternal destiny of others and seeking their well-being by sharing the hope of the gospel.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (NLT): “Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.”

Urgency of the Gospel:

The message of salvation through Jesus Christ is urgent. People’s eternal destinies depend on their response to the gospel. Therefore, evangelism is not to be delayed or taken lightly.

  • Romans 10:14-15 (NLT): “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, ‘How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!’”

The Power of the Gospel:

God’s heart on evangelism is driven by the power of the gospel to change lives. It is not simply a message of words, but of transformative power that can radically alter a person’s heart and eternal destiny.

  • Romans 1:16 (NLT): “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.”

In summary, God’s heart on evangelism is motivated by His deep love and desire for everyone to experience salvation through Jesus Christ. Evangelism is a call to partner with God in sharing His love and hope, to offer the good news of Jesus to those who are lost, and to make disciples of all nations. It reflects God’s compassion, His grace, and His urgency for people to be saved and reconciled to Him.

Key Scriptures on Evangelism:
