DECEPTION

God makes it clear that deception is a serious issue and a powerful tool of the enemy. It blinds people to the truth, leads them away from God, and brings destruction. But those who stay anchored in God’s Word, seek His wisdom, and follow Jesus will be able to discern and resist deception.

The Bible warns extensively about deception, urging believers to stay vigilant, discerning, and rooted in God’s truth. Deception comes in many forms—false teachings, self-deception, worldly influences, and spiritual lies from the enemy. Here’s what Scripture says about deception:

Deception Comes from the Enemy

  • John 8:44 (NLT) – “For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

  • Revelation 12:9 (NLT) – “This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.”

False Teachers and False Prophets Deceive Many

  • 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NLT) – “These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end, they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.”

  • Matthew 24:24 (NLT) – “For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.”

Self-Deception is Dangerous

  • James 1:22 (NLT) – “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

  • Galatians 6:3 (NLT) – “If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”

The World’s Deception Leads People Away from God

  • Colossians 2:8 (NLT) – “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”

  • Romans 1:25 (NLT) – “They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.”

God Calls Believers to Walk in Truth

  • John 14:6 (NLT) – “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’”

  • Ephesians 6:14 (NLT) – “Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.”

  • 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 (NLT) – “He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies.”

How to Guard Against Deception

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”

  • Psalm 119:105 (NLT) – “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

  • 1 John 4:1 (NLT) – “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”
