What Is Godly Anointing?

Godly anointing is the divine empowerment, consecration, and setting apart of an individual by God for His purpose. It is the Holy Spirit’s presence and power at work in a person’s life, equipping them for spiritual growth, leadership, ministry, and divine assignments. Anointing is not just a symbolic act but a spiritual reality that comes from God alone.

Anointing as God’s Selection and Calling

In the Bible, anointing signifies God choosing and setting apart individuals for specific roles, such as kings, prophets, and priests.

📖 1 Samuel 16:13 – “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.”

Anointed Before You’re Appointed: Trusting God in the Waiting

We love the moments of breakthrough. The doors opening. The favor falling. The long-awaited promotion or ministry platform finally arriving. But there’s a part of every God-story that’s less glamorous—and often far longer:

The waiting.

And yet, many of God’s greatest leaders were anointed before they were ever appointed.

David Was Anointed—And Not Yet King

David’s story is the clearest picture of this truth.

In 1 Samuel 16, God sends the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king. After bypassing all of Jesse’s older, stronger sons, Samuel is directed by God to choose the shepherd boy—the overlooked one—David.

In that moment, David is anointed. The oil flows. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon him in power.

But what happens next?

David goes back to the fields.
Back to tending sheep.
Back to obscurity.

He was anointed as king… but not yet appointed to the throne.

But you may not yet be walking in the fullness of your appointment. And that’s okay.

Joseph had dreams of leadership—but he was sold, enslaved, and imprisoned before ever reaching Pharaoh’s palace.
Moses was called to deliver Israel—but spent forty years in the wilderness before God sent him.
Even Jesus waited thirty years before beginning His public ministry.

The call is real. But so is the process.

How Do You Steward the Time Between?

Here’s how to walk through the season between your anointing and your appointing:

1. Stay Faithful in the Field

Don’t despise small beginnings. David’s faithfulness in the pasture prepared him for the palace.

2. Let God Shape Your Character

Anointing without character can destroy a person. Allow God to humble you, teach you, and mold you before He elevates you.

3. Worship While You Wait

David didn’t stop singing just because he wasn't yet seen. Worship grounds us in God's presence and keeps our hearts aligned with His.

Honor the Process

Don’t try to force the appointment. David didn’t kill Saul, even when he had the chance—he trusted God’s timing.

God Hasn’t Forgotten You

If you’ve ever wondered, “God, why am I still here?” or “When will the door open?”—know this:

Delay is not denial.

God anoints in private before He appoints in public. He sees your obedience, your quiet service, your behind-the-scenes faithfulness. And in due time, He will lift you up.
